I have two Kastking Shark III 1000 reels and I’m quite satisfied with them. They’ve been my go-to reels for freshwater and some light saltwater fishing. I haven’t had any issues with them so far, except for rare occasions when there’s a bit of roughness in the reel mechanism that corrects itself eventually.
Given their bad reputation, I expect that the quality across different products may vary significantly due to the cheap manufacturing process. Some are great, giving you value for your money; but if you buy the same model again it might wear out in a week or less.
If you’re looking to get a 300-size reel and you want to stay on a tight budget, there aren’t many options for high-quality reels. I haven’t used any of those reels myself, but I’ve spoken with some people who have Chinese budget reels.
From what I hear, KastKing reels are okay when you first get them, but it’s their performance and durability over time that differentiates them from more expensive models from bigger brands. According to those I’ve talked to, the Piscifun Alijoz 300 seems to be of better quality – comparable price but with better bearings, gears, and drag components.
In order to get an even line lay, the spool of a reel needs to be carefully positioned. If it’s too low, more lines will be wound at the top; if it’s too high, there’ll be more lines at the bottom. To adjust this, washers can be inserted between the spool and the frame.
If you have an extra reel lying around, you can also remove the line from yours by reeling it onto that one. Personally, I haven’t been a fan of KastKing reels; although Penn reels aren’t perfect either – some of them tend to demonstrate this issue – they are built with sturdiness in mind so I consider that a redeeming quality.
Based on my experience, KastKing baitcasters are an excellent value for the price. I have freshwater bass-fished with them and found that they provide great performance and a smooth feel. After a few years, though, they tend to lose some of their smoothness when compared to pricier brands. To increase durability, it’s important to stay on top of regular maintenance. I’ve caught an 8lb bass and a 9lb musky with these reels without any trouble; if I’m in the market for a baitcaster next time, I’ll certainly be going back to KastKing.
