I agree that the XT may not be a huge upgrade in terms of performance, but I do love the way it looks. Last year’s limited edition with the cherrywood handle was especially nice.
In my experience, the Supreme XT is an excellent reel. It’s lightweight, weighing in at just 8oz, and the grip material is comfortable enough for all-day use. The size 40 has an incredible 41″ retrieve rate, although I’m not sure about the smaller sizes. I’ve also tried the Supreme baitcasting and it’s been great for me.
While some people say that Pflueger has become “cheap,” I still believe that they make top-quality reels. Although they stick with 10 bearings while other brands like Shimano and 13Fishing have reels with up to 13 bearings, which would be amazing. Lews also makes some great spinning reels. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference and what works best for your fishing style.
As a new fisherman, I took the advice of my local shop and got a Pfleuger President as my first “real” reel. After doing some research online, I haven’t found anyone with anything negative to say about them.
Personally, I’ve been very happy with mine and even went ahead and bought another for my light rod. They have both been performing great so far.
When I eventually decide to get a heavier rod to add to my collection, I’ll probably stick with a President just like my other two.
