I personally believe that plastic fish grips are a better option for handling fish because they distribute the pressure over a larger area, reducing the risk of injuring the fish. In my experience, metal boga-style grips can sometimes punch a hole through the fish’s mouth or even break its jaws if the fish thrashes around too much.
That being said, I do use metal grips for catching snakeheads because they have such tight jaws that plastic grips just won’t work. In those cases, the thinner metal grips allow me to pry open their mouths and slide them in.
Ultimately, the goal should always be to handle fish with care and minimize any harm or stress to the fish as much as possible. Whether you choose to use plastic or metal grips, make sure to handle the fish gently and release it quickly and safely back into the water.
I find it incredibly helpful to keep my fish gripper leashed to my seat when I’m out in my kayak. It can be cramped in there and having a secure grip on the fish allows me to keep it in the water while I grab my pliers, weigh and measure it, or even snap a quick photo.
However, I want to emphasize the importance of handling bigger fish like pike or musky with care. These fish require proper support and should be lifted carefully to avoid injuring them.

I’m planning a trip to Lake Lewisville in Texas this weekend and I stopped by the local Bass Pro Shops to get some advice from their resident kayak fishing expert. When I asked him what I should get to really enjoy myself out on the water, he told me to just fish, have fun, and figure out what would make my life easier after a few trips.
But when I asked him what was necessary, he said that a fish gripper is an absolute must-have. He explained that when you catch your first fish and reel it in, you’ll need to figure out what to do with it next. Many people’s first instinct is to place the fish between their legs, but that’s not the best idea, especially when there’s a treble hook involved.
Instead, he recommended using a fish gripper and pliers to safely remove the hook from the fish before doing anything else. This way, you can handle the fish without risking injury to yourself or the fish.
So, if you’re planning a kayak fishing trip, make sure you have a fish gripper on hand. It’s a small but essential tool that can make a big difference in your overall fishing experience.
I personally own a Boga Grip and I have to say, even though it’s on the pricey side of fish grippers, it’s definitely worth the investment. The built-in scale in the handle is incredibly accurate and mechanical, so you don’t have to worry about batteries running out. The grip itself is also extremely well-built and feels premium in your hands. Plus, I’ve never had a fish wiggle free from it.
In my opinion, Boga Grips are simply the best fish grippers on the market. Some of the models even have a swivel head, which can be a game-changer when it comes to handling fish.
That being said, I also have a cheaper brand of the fish gripper that doesn’t have a swivel action on the head. I only use this gripper when I’m Northern Pike fishing on rocky cliffs where I can’t use nets and lay the fish down to unhook. When the fish spins, I have to use the wrist bracelet and just let the whole gripper spin with the fish. It’s not ideal, but it gets the job done when I’m in a pinch.
Fish grippers with metal jaws can be harmful to the fish, as they have the potential to break teeth and permanently damage the jaw. This could lead to the death of the fish, which we definitely want to avoid. On the other hand, fish grippers with plastic jaws seem to be more delicate and won’t harm the fish as much. Plus, they make handling the fish much easier, which means less time spent out of the water for them.
I personally prefer using a Boga-like gripper for smaller species like pike or walleye. For most other species, I don’t think it’s necessary to use a gripper. However, I do think it’s important to handle the fish properly to avoid damaging their slime coat. While fish grippers might not look the coolest in fish pictures, they’re definitely a better option than wrestling the fish on the ground and potentially harming it.
It’s important to handle fish with care and minimize their time out of the water, especially for catch and release. Depending on the species and its level of toothiness, a fish gripper can be a useful tool for quickly removing the hook and getting the fish back in the water.
In my opinion, getting the fish off the line and back in the water as quickly as possible is crucial for its survival and to maintain a healthy population for the future.
Of course, if the intention is to catch and kill, then handling the fish becomes less of an issue. However, it’s still important to be respectful and efficient in the process to minimize any unnecessary suffering. At the end of the day, it’s all about being responsible and respectful towards the fish and the environment.
Reducing handling time is just as important as preserving fish slime. That’s why I use gloves whenever possible to minimize my contact with the fish. While gloves might remove some of the slimes, I find that they help me work more quickly and efficiently, especially when I need to handle big teeth fish.

Personally, I prefer using disposable nitrile gloves because they are not bulky and do not hinder my dexterity. They also come in handy when I need to work fast and accurately. I also use fish grippers, particularly for small-mouth bass, because my hands are small and the fish has already hooked me twice, which was pretty painful.
I don’t believe that my plastic grippers cause any harm to the fish, as they are clamp-style vice-grip ones. I even use them to revive and release the fish because I don’t want to stick my hand in the water, especially at night. It might sound strange, but I believe it’s better for the fish and safer for me.
I personally use Boga grips for fishing and find them to be of great quality. While there is an option to certify the scale for extra money, I find that the scale is already accurate without the certification. If you’re looking for a digital scale, I suggest buying a cheaper one as the Boga grip doesn’t have that feature.

However, if you’re looking for a more affordable option, the Berkley lip grip scale is a good choice. I have been using it for years and it has been very accurate within an ounce or two, which is good enough for me. In fact, two of my friends have the same one and are equally satisfied with it.

Using Boga-style grips on Musky and pike can cause significant damage to their mouths. These fish have a soft lower jaw and floor in their mouth, and the grips can rip the floor open, break teeth, and even break the jaw. It’s important to avoid holding a Musky by its jaw as well, even without the added damage from the grips.
While Boga grips are designed for hard-mouthed saltwater fish, they can still cause serious harm if not used properly. I used to use them for freshwater fishing, but after seeing the damage they could cause to pike, I switched to using a good net or cradle instead. If you feel like you must use a tool, I would recommend the plastic Rapala jaw grabbers as a safer option for handling fish.
When it comes to handling fish, my approach varies depending on the situation. If I’m dealing with a single hook bait and a large-mouthed fish like a bass, I’ll typically lip it.
However, if my bait has treble hooks or if the fish is toothy, I prefer to use a net as it can be dangerous dealing with a thrashing fish. In any case, I always use a fish grip to safely hold the fish while taking pictures or preparing for measurement. If I wasn’t taking pictures, the net would be all I needed.
Using fish grippers is definitely recommended, especially for certain species or when handling unfamiliar fish. While there are many different styles available, some of the cheaper ones may not last as long due to breaking or rusting out faster.
Personally, I’ve been using the Zacx brand, which has held up well for about two years. I make sure to drop some oil on the innerspring every once in a while to keep it in good condition.
My go-to fish grip is “The Fish Grip,” which comes in two sizes, floats, and even glows in the dark. I typically use the smaller size, which I keep on my belt, and have the larger one in my backpack. As I don’t often catch very large fish (over 25 inches), the smaller size is usually sufficient for my needs.

However, it’s important to consider the potential impact these tools can have on the health and survival of the fish. In a recent study, we evaluated the use of a mechanical lip-gripping device on wild adult bonefish, assessing its impact on fish injury, behavior, and survival in a seawater laboratory.
We found that the lip-gripping device caused mouth injuries to a significant percentage of bonefish held either in water or in the air, with some of the injuries being severe. While none of the fish died within 48 hours, the long-term impact of these injuries is unknown.
Anglers should exercise caution when using mechanical lip-gripping devices on bonefish, and consider alternative handling methods until further studies can provide a clearer understanding of the risks involved. It’s important that we prioritize the well-being and survival of the fish we catch and release, and make every effort to minimize harm during the handling process.
