As a general rule, you’ll want to use a leader that’s at least as long as the lure itself. Larger lures or deeper depths may require a longer leader line. And in strong currents, you’ll want to use a shorter leader line to avoid getting swept away.
However, a good starting point would be to make your leader line about twice as long as the depth you are fishing in. For example, if you are fishing in water that is 30 feet deep, then your leader line should be at least 60 feet long.
If you’re fishing in really deep water, you may need a longer leader line. On the other hand, if you’re fishing in shallow water, you can get away with using a shorter leader line.
This is because when you are jigging, you want the bait to be close to the bottom. A longer leader line will cause your bait to hang up on the bottom more often and decrease your chances of catching fish.
