Casting rods are better suited for heavier baits and lures while spinning rods are better suited for smaller baits and lures. So if you’re looking to fish for smaller fish using lighter jigs, then a spinning rod would be a good choice.
When jigging, you want a rod that is stiff and strong so that you can set the hook quickly when you get a bite. A spinning rod is not as stiff or strong as a baitcasting or trolling rod, so it is not as well-suited for jigging.
However, if all you have is a spinning rod, it will work fine for jigging in a pinch. Just make sure to use a heavier line (at least 20 lb test) and use a bigger jighead (1/2 oz or more).
Jigs are heavy lures that require a lot of force to set the hook and pull them out of deep water. A casting or trolling rod is better suited for jigging.
That said, there are some situations where a casting rod might be better suited for jigging – for example, when fishing in deep water or when trying to cast large jigs.
