🌊 The Enchanting Allure of Bowfishing: Archery Meets Angling
In the vast world of outdoor sports, few meld ancient tradition with modern enthusiasm quite like bowfishing. It’s where the precision of archery 🏹 gracefully waltzes with the patience of fishing 🎣, creating a truly unique and captivating experience.
Archery + Fishing: A Historical Blend 🏹
Bowfishing isn’t a novel invention of the modern age. Historically, indigenous peoples across different continents used this method to gather food. With a keen eye, unwavering hand, and an arrow poised to strike, ancient hunters would stalk their aquatic prey, combining the skills of a marksman and an angler. Over time, this survival technique transitioned into a recreational sport, captivating enthusiasts worldwide.
Why Equipment Matters 🛠️
As with any sport, the tools can significantly influence one’s experience and success. When bowfishing, your bow is more than just a piece of equipment; it’s an extension of you. Here’s why the right gear is pivotal:
☑️ Precision: Bowfishing requires a unique blend of accuracy. The refraction of water can distort a fish’s actual position, making the right bow crucial to account for this optical illusion.
☑️ Durability: Unlike traditional archery, bowfishing exposes your bow to water, moisture, and varied conditions. You need gear designed to withstand these challenges.
☑️ Safety: The right equipment ensures not only a successful hunt but also a safe experience. Whether it’s preventing arrow snap-back or ensuring your reel functions correctly, quality gear is a safety investment.
☑️ Ethical Harvesting: Efficient equipment ensures a humane and ethical harvest, minimizing the suffering of the fish and ensuring it doesn’t escape with an arrow injury.
The Dawn of Bowfishing: A Journey Through Time 🕰️
Venture with us as we unravel the fascinating tapestry of bowfishing’s past, witnessing its evolution from a primal survival tactic to today’s exhilarating sport.
From Ancient Shores to Modern Waters
Long before the invention of fishing nets or rods, early civilizations recognized the bounty the waters held. Yet, it wasn’t just about casting a line and hoping for the best. They needed a method that was swift, efficient, and dependable. Enter: bowfishing.
Ancient communities, from the river valleys of Asia to the coastal tribes of North America, adopted the technique of using a bow and arrow to catch fish. These arrows, often barbed or serrated, ensured that once the fish was struck, it would remain secure. Bowfishing wasn’t merely a hobby for these folks—it was an essential survival strategy, providing sustenance for entire communities.
Modern Day Resurgence 🚀
Fast forward to today, and while bowfishing’s primary objective may have shifted from sustenance to sport, its core essence remains unchanged. Several factors contribute to its resurgence:
🟨 Eco-Responsibility: Modern bowfishers often target invasive species, aiding in ecological balance.
🟨 Unique Challenge: The sport combines the calm patience of fishing with the rapid skill-shot of archery, appealing to a broad range of enthusiasts.
🟨 Community and Camaraderie: With tournaments, clubs, and online forums, bowfishing has fostered a tight-knit, passionate community.
Precision Meets Patience 🎯🕰️
At the heart of bowfishing lies a harmonious blend of two virtues: precision and patience. One must patiently wait for the perfect shot, then with calculated precision, release the arrow. It’s this meditative yet active balance that has endeared bowfishing to so many, making it a rapidly growing sport.

How Do Bowfishing Bows Bass Pro Work?
Bowfishing is a thrilling and challenging way to catch fish using a specialized bow and arrow. Bass Pro Shops is a popular retailer of outdoor and fishing gear, and they offer a range of bowfishing bows. Here is a guide to help you understand how the best bowfishing bows from Bass Pro work:
Bowfishing bows are designed to be durable and reliable, with a simple design that can handle tough conditions. They typically have a heavy draw weight of 40 to 60 pounds, which helps to shoot arrows with enough force to penetrate the water and catch fish.
Bowfishing bows use specialized arrows that are designed to be used in water. These arrows are usually made of fiberglass or carbon fiber and have a barbed point that helps to catch fish. They are also equipped with a line or reel that allows the fisherman to retrieve the arrow and the fish.
Bowfishing bows come in different styles, including recurve, compound, and hybrid bows. Recurve bows are traditional bows that are simple and easy to use. Compound bows use a system of pulleys and cables that make them more powerful and accurate. Hybrid bows combine the best features of recurve and compound bows.
When using a bowfishing bow, the shooter stands in a boat or on the shore and aims at the fish in the water. Because the refraction of light in water can make it difficult to aim accurately, bowfishermen often aim slightly below the fish to compensate.
Once the arrow has been shot and has hit the fish, the line or reel attached to the arrow is used to retrieve the fish. Bowfishing bows are often used to catch rough fish like carp, gar, and buffalo, which are not typically caught with traditional fishing methods.

What is Bowfishing?
When we think of bows and arrows, famous Indians from American Western films or even ancient hunters who used primitive hunting tools to capture their prey come to mind. The use of a bow for hunting is far more common than the discipline I am about to tell you about. Bowfishing is a nascent technique that has become popular in recent years.
Many fishermen might say that this has nothing to do with traditional fishing. And they may be right, but it would not be a good idea to ignore this technique, since knowing new fishing styles and techniques is the best way to find out how to choose what we like and what we don’t.
Bowfishing is about launching an arrow from our chosen fishing position towards the point where we see the school of fish. Then you pull the fish with the line. It attaches to the boom at one end and the reel at the other. This technique is native to the United States and is very popular, especially with the youngest looking for new forms of entertainment.
Bowfishing Technique
Boat Fishing. Fishing with a bow in a boat is interesting. This method allows you to travel long distances and a variety of choices for fishing sites. The difficulty is to bring the boat close enough to the fish (visibility in the water, the direction, and speed of the wind and the current of the reservoir must be taken into account) without intimidating the fish. The best hunting spots are rocky shores where two currents of water meet to form shoals. Fishing from a boat can be a good and effective option as long as the fisherman doesn’t mind getting wet. Wading along rivers allows the shooter to get close to the fish if he does so discreetly and skillfully.
Another technique for such fishing is to stand on large rocks in shallow rivers. This provides a better view of the water. Moving from rock to rock in the river makes the fish move if they are inactive. It is good to walk together, while one hunter is wading, and the other stands motionless on the rock. All of these river methods are best for carp or catfish and depending on the area you are in.
How to be Successful at Bowfishing?
Knowing where to aim an arrow can be one of the most difficult skills. Due to the refraction of water and the way it optically distorts the position of objects in a liquid element, aiming directly at a target usually fails. Aiming well below the target compensates for the optical illusion. The depth and distance to the target also affect which direction the arrow should shoot.
Aiming 10 cm down for every 3 meters of distance we are from our target can compensate for this distorting effect of objects in the water. Although the actual compensation for refracted light must be taken into account not only for distance and depth but also for the angle. As is always the case with fishing, practice will tell you the optimal sizes and distances to shoot correctly and increase your chances of success.
🎯 Picking the Right Bowfishing Bow: A Professional’s Guide to Making the Perfect Choice 🌊
The art of bowfishing brings with it a unique set of challenges and demands. Just as a seasoned angler is selective about their fishing rod, a bowfisher must be equally discerning when choosing their bow. Dive into this comprehensive guide crafted for enthusiasts at every skill level.
Match Your Mastery: Determine Your Skill Level 📈
Every archer’s journey is distinct, and the ideal bow for each phase differs:
- Beginners 🟢: Seek bows with adjustable draw lengths, ensuring comfort as you get familiar. Look for models that offer tutorials or guidance, aiding a smoother learning curve.
- Intermediate 🔶: As skills refine, so should the equipment. Opt for bows with higher draw weights and fine-tuning capabilities, allowing for more power and precision.
- Experts 🔴: At this stage, customization is key. Bows with advanced cam systems, modular designs, and specialized materials cater to seasoned bowfishers, amplifying accuracy and efficiency.
Power in Pounds: Focus on Draw Weight 💪
Understanding draw weight is pivotal. It dictates the force needed to pull the bowstring:
- Lighter Draw Weights (20-30 lbs): Suitable for smaller fish and clearer waters. Also ideal for those just starting out.
- Medium Draw Weights (30-45 lbs): Versatile and great for general bowfishing, targeting medium-sized fish.
- Heavier Draw Weights (45+ lbs): For seasoned archers targeting larger species, especially in murky waters.
Two Hands, One Bow: Ambidextrous Features 🤚🤚
Approximately 10% of the population is left-handed. A good bowfishing bow should cater to everyone:
- Interchangeable Rests: Allows for switching between left and right-hand orientations.
- Symmetric Grips: Ensures comfort and efficiency, regardless of the hand dominant in drawing the string.
Fluid Flexibility: Adaptability in Diverse Environments 🌦️🐟
Bowfishing isn’t one-size-fits-all. Different water conditions and fish types demand versatile gear:
- Adjustable Sights: Provides clarity in both clear and murky waters.
- Varied Arrow Tips: Interchangeable tips cater to different fish types, from the soft-bodied to the tougher, armored varieties.
In essence, the path to bowfishing success isn’t just about skill—it’s also about having the right companion in the form of a meticulously chosen bow. With this guide in hand, every bowfisher, from novice to expert, can make an informed and strategic choice, ensuring a rewarding experience on the water.
🎯 Bowfishing Bootcamp: Essential Tips & Tricks for Beginners
Setting out on the bowfishing journey? This exhilarating sport merges the thrills of archery with the patience of fishing. But, like any skill, it requires practice, knowledge, and a touch of insider wisdom. Here’s a concise guide to kickstart your bowfishing endeavors.
Making Waves: Perfecting Aim in Moving Waters 🌊
Adapting to the aquatic environment is your first test. Moving waters present a visual illusion called refraction, where the fish appears closer than it actually is.
- Aim Lower: Due to refraction, always aim a bit lower than where you see the fish. The faster the fish or the deeper it is, the lower you should aim.
- Steady Stance: Plant your feet firmly. The rocking of the boat or the push of currents can offset your balance, affecting your shot.
- Practice Makes Perfect: Use floating objects or underwater targets during practice sessions to hone your aiming skills.
Sun & Shadows: Time of Day and Its Impact 🌞🌙
Bowfishing success can be influenced by the sun’s position:
- Golden Hours: Early morning and late afternoon are often considered prime times. The sun’s low angle reduces water glare, making fish more visible.
- Night Expeditions: Some bowfishers swear by nighttime trips, using floodlights to spot and attract fish. However, this requires additional gear and experience.
Safety First: Essential Precautions to Observe 🛑
While bowfishing is an exhilarating sport, it’s vital to prioritize safety:
- Never Dry Fire: Releasing the bowstring without an arrow (dry firing) can damage the bow and potentially cause injury.
- Know Your Surroundings: Be aware of others around you when drawing or releasing your bow to avoid accidents.
- Stay Hydrated & Sun-Protected: Wear sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses, and keep a water bottle handy, especially during day expeditions.

As a bowfishing enthusiast, I highly recommend checking out the bowfishing bows offered by Bass Pro. They have a wide variety of options available, including some of the best bows on the market.
Personally, I’ve had great success with the AMS Bowfishing Water Moc Recurve Bow, Cajun Fish Stick Take-Down Bow, and PSE Tidal Wave Bowfishing Bow. These bows are designed specifically for bowfishing with heavy draw weights, specialized features, and durable construction that makes them effective in shallow waters.
Plus, Bass Pro also offers a range of bowfishing arrows with specialized tips that make the process even easier and more efficient. Overall, if you’re looking for high-quality bowfishing equipment, Bass Pro is definitely the place to go.
It seems that Bass Pro may not necessarily focus on offering a wide range of high-end bows in-store, but instead prioritize beginner bows and lessons to attract new customers.
When someone is just starting out with archery, they may want immediate gratification and access to equipment that’s suitable for children and up, which can be found at a local shop that specializes in archery. These local shops often have better expertise in setting up a compound bow properly, which is essential for a beginner’s success.
As for selection, local shops usually have the ability to order most products, and sometimes even more than what’s available at a larger retailer like Bass Pro. While Bass Pro may stock 2-3 of each bow, my local shop stocks 1-2 of each, but can still order just about anything I need.
However, it’s important to note that not all local shops are created equal. Depending on where you live, some local shops may not have the same level of expertise or product availability as others.
In my experience, I trust my local shop over Bass Pro, but that may not be the case for everyone. As always, it’s best to do your own research and make a decision based on your own needs and preferences.
I have mixed feelings about Cabela’s/Bass Pro and Field and Stream. While they are convenient options for me since I live just a 30-minute drive away from both stores, I find myself mostly browsing and not making any purchases.
On a couple of occasions, I’ve gone into both Cabela’s and Field and Stream with the intention of buying something within the $50-$100 range. However, I’ve had frustrating experiences where the clerks were chatting with each other instead of helping me, even though I was clearly in need of assistance. This has made me feel ignored and unimportant, which is not a great feeling as a customer.
In contrast, I recently visited Vance Outdoors in Columbus and was blown away by the level of service I received. The staff there dropped everything just to answer my questions and help me understand the products better. Their excellent customer service definitely won my loyalty and repeat business. It’s experiences like these that remind me of the importance of shopping locally.
Overall, while big retailers like Cabela’s and Field and Stream may have a wider selection of products, the quality of service at a local shop like Vance Outdoors makes all the difference to me as a customer.
I’m in the market for my first bow fishing set up to leave on my bass boat. I don’t want to break the bank, but I do understand that spending a little extra money upfront can be beneficial in the long run. I’m considering a few options:
First, I could buy a used or cheap compound bow and add a reel setup for bow fishing.
Second, I could opt for a bow fishing combo from Bass Pro or another store.
Lastly, I’m also wondering if a crossbow fishing setup could work for me.
While I love using my Mathews VXR 31.5 for hunting and target shooting, I don’t think it would be a good fit for bow fishing. I’d like to keep my budget around $300 if possible, but I’m definitely open to other options. My wife already thinks bow hunting is expensive enough, so I don’t want to go too crazy on a bow fishing setup!
In my opinion, option 1 can be good if you have experience with bows and know what to look for in a used one. However, most bowfishing bows have low or no let-off since you don’t use sights for aiming. Also, buying a used bowfishing bow can be risky since these bows are often subjected to a lot of wear and tear.
Option 2 is what I recommend since there are great bowfishing packages available that have everything you need to get started. If you decide that bowfishing isn’t for you, the resale value won’t be too much lower since the setup is still pretty new. Some great packages to consider are the Muzzy Vice kit, AMS Water Moc kit, PSE Discovery 3 (D3) kit, and Cajun Shore Runner kit.
Personally, I dislike the idea of crossbow fishing. I’ve tried it once with a cheap setup and found it to be too powerful and risky since you have to leave it loaded. Since you know how to shoot a bow, I suggest sticking to a compound bow.
For rests, I always recommend the Muzzy Fishook and the Quickdraw rest. As for reels, the AMS Retriever is an awesome option that requires little maintenance and won’t lose many arrows. If you prefer a spincast style reel, go for the Cajun Spin Dr or Muzzy and get a “clicky stick” to put the reel into free spool mode without having to push a button. Just pull the lever back and start reeling.
I’ve had a frustrating experience trying to find arrows for my recurve bow at my local Bass Pro/Cabela’s. Despite having several models of recurve bows available for purchase, they seem to have almost nothing in terms of arrows for anything other than compounds.
The Columbus Cabela’s has a decent selection of arrows, but they primarily focus on compound bows, with only one endcap featuring a traditional bow by Bear. During my last visit, I was ignored by the staff, likely because I didn’t fit the usual clientele at Cabela’s.
In contrast, I had a much more positive experience at Vance Outdoors and Fisherman’s Warehouse. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by friendly staff who were eager to answer all my questions and help me find what I needed. It’s clear that shopping locally can make a big difference in terms of customer service and satisfaction.
As a left-handed shooter living in Pierre (Pier), South Dakota, I’ve had a hard time finding the equipment I need. I visited a store in Mitchell, South Dakota, and was disappointed to find that they had no left-handed options available, except for some used guns. Even for a simple lever action 22LR rifle, I had to settle for an expensive Marlin instead of the more affordable Henry I wanted.
However, when it comes to archery, I’ve had better luck at Scheels. Though they don’t carry many one-pieces recurve bows, they do have a decent selection of other equipment. Unfortunately, other stores in the area seem to only carry the latest models of compound bows or bow fishing equipment. Even the Genesis models they offer are all for adults, and they don’t carry any beginner models that might be safer.
In fact, the only store that used to sell non-compound bows has shifted its focus to guns and fishing gear. They only carry a few old models of Adidas Outdoor shoes, along with some heavier hiking boots and water sandals. This is likely due to the popularity of fishing in the area, which has brought in major tournaments and events.
The hunting laws in South Dakota seem to assume that everyone uses a compound bow, which can make it difficult for those of us who prefer other types of bows.
I just wanted to provide some insight from the perspective of an Archery associate working at BP. I’m sorry if you’ve had a bad experience at your local Cabela’s or BP, but there are a few things you should know about our job.
Firstly, we don’t get paid a lot and there is no commission. Archery is actually under the hunting department, which includes firearms. Since firearms are the main source of income for the entire store, it takes priority over everything else. This means that if they are short-staffed, we may get pulled to work in other departments. At my store, there is usually only one archery specialist working at a time.
In addition, we don’t have any stock control. We receive what is shipped to us, and sometimes it may not be exactly what we need. For example, if we receive 40 boxes of 400 spine Maxims, that’s what we have to work with. This can make it difficult to find the right equipment for customers, especially if they have specific needs.
When it comes to knowledge, it’s important to understand that there are thousands of brands and models of bows. Each bow has its own unique features and complications, which can make it challenging to provide the right advice for every customer. While we do try our best to help, we may not have all the answers.
Many of us work in archery as a second job because we are passionate about it. Some of us have even been former pro archers, certified coaches, or even pro shop owners. However, we don’t receive any training from BP or Cabela’s, so we have to do our own research to stay informed.
If you’ve had a bad experience with customer service at your local BP or Cabela’s, I encourage you to apply and make a change. It’s easy to criticize Reddit, but it’s much harder to take action and make a difference.
As someone who has been involved in the archery community for a while now, I have noticed a recurring issue with shops like Cabela’s and other hunting-oriented stores. These stores often offer a limited range of products, which can be frustrating for those of us who are looking for a specific gear or just trying to explore our options.
For example, many of these shops only carry high-end recurve bows that cost upwards of $1000. While these bows are certainly impressive, they are not necessarily what everyone is looking for. In fact, many people starting out in archery are better off with a sub-$250 model, like the Kinetics or a cheaper WNS.
Similarly, these shops often only carry expensive, high-end limbs, when in reality, the most popular limbs are the ones that cost around $100. This lack of variety can be frustrating, especially when you’re just starting out and trying to figure out what works best for you.
While I understand that these stores are primarily focused on hunting gear, it’s important to remember that archery is a sport and hobby for many people. By limiting their product range, these shops are ignoring a large group of potential customers. This is not just a problem with Cabela’s and other big-box stores, but also with American archery companies in general.
Many American companies use licensed retailers to create brand loyalty and push out foreign products, which can be frustrating for customers who are looking for a wider range of options. For example, Hoyt no longer makes entry-level recurve bows, and it can be difficult to find target compounds in the $500-800 USD price range. Some of the best affordable hunting ILF recurves on the market are not even American-made.
I believe that the archery community would benefit from more shops that offer a wider range of products and price points. This would allow beginners and experienced archers alike to find the gear that works best for them and help to grow the sport as a whole.
I have had conversations with several ex-bass pro bow technicians and it is concerning that they receive no formal training on how to perform their duties. Instead, they rely on watching YouTube videos to learn how to repair bows. If this is the case, then why not save yourself some money and purchase a bow press to perform the repairs yourself?
I would suggest going to an actual pro shop, especially a multi-brand shop, instead of relying on bass pro bows. At these shops, you will find sales on previous year’s models, consignment bows, a variety of higher-end brands, and more knowledgeable/experienced staff. They will help you find what fits you best, both physically and financially.
It is important to note that pro shops may have limitations when it comes to experimenting with heavier arrows and higher FOC later on. Many shops push for speed and mechanicals or matching your arrow weight to what you’re hunting. However, when it comes to Ranch Fairy, Dr. Ashby, and Adult arrows, some pro shops may not be as knowledgeable and start to panic.
In my experience, the “grumpy” old guy in the shop is often the most honest and helpful in the long run.
I recently had a less-than-satisfactory experience with purchasing a bow from Bass Pro. While browsing for a new bow, I noticed that they didn’t have any contracts with major brands like Hoyt or Matthews. However, I almost bought a package set from them because I wanted a new bow before the season started. The set I was considering was a Diamond by Bow Tech with a low-quality whisker biscuit-type rest and a Redhead sight.
Unfortunately, I became quite frustrated with their customer service when I asked general sizing questions. It was clear to me that their service and products were of low quality. This experience changed my perspective on Bass Pro. I ultimately decided to visit a local bow shop, even though they didn’t have high ratings.
In my honest opinion, I recommend going to your local shop to try out a few bows and find one that feels right for you. Once you’ve found the perfect bow, you can search for it on LancasterArchery.com, as they often have better prices than local stores. Once the bow arrives, take it to your local shop to have everything set up. Whether you choose to buy accessories from the local shop, Bass Pro, or Lancaster is up to you.
I recently visited Bass Pro to purchase some arrows, but unfortunately, they didn’t have any in stock. However, I did manage to find a solid bow that caught my eye. The salesman mentioned that Bear now manufactures the bows since the merger with Cabela’s.
Despite not being able to physically handle the arrows before purchase, I decided to order them online. With the bow in hand, I’m confident that the arrows will be a good fit. Thanks to the helpful salesman and their advice, I feel much more confident in my purchase decision.
