Types of halibut fishing reels: An Overview of Halibut Fishing Reels
When it comes to halibut fishing, choosing the right reel is essential. 🐙There are three main types of reels that anglers use for halibut fishing: baitcasting, spinning, and conventional reels.
Get Hooked: Exploring the World of Baitcasting Halibut Fishing Reels
Baitcasting reels are popular for their accuracy and casting distance. They are designed to be used with heavy lines and lures, making them ideal for targeting halibut in deep waters. These reels are also known for their powerful drag systems, which are necessary when fighting large, strong fish like halibut. Baitcasting reels are great for experienced anglers who are comfortable with the technique and want the most control over their fishing line.
Spinning Your Way to Success: How to Choose the Best Halibut Fishing Reel
Spinning reels, on the other hand, are easier to use and are ideal for beginners or those who prefer a lighter gear setup. These reels are versatile and can be used with a wide variety of lures and lines, making them a good choice for halibut fishing in both shallow and deep waters. Spinning reels also have a smooth drag system that allows anglers to easily adjust the tension during a fight with a halibut.
Conventional Wisdom: The Ins and Outs of Halibut Fishing with a Conventional Reel
Conventional reels, also known as trolling or jigging reels, are the most traditional type of reel used for halibut fishing. They are designed for trolling or jigging, which involves moving the bait or lure through the water at a steady pace. These reels are known for their high line capacity and ability to handle heavy lines and lures. However, they can be difficult to use for beginners and require more skill and experience to master.
🐙In summary, each type of halibut fishing reel has its own strengths and weaknesses. Baitcasting reels offer the most control and power but require more skill to use effectively. Spinning reels are easier to use and versatile, while conventional reels are best for trolling or jigging. Consider your level of experience, fishing style, and the conditions you’ll be fishing in when choosing the right reel for halibut fishing.
Reeling Them In The Top Features to Consider in Halibut Fishing Reels
When selecting a halibut fishing reel, there are several key features to consider. These features can make a significant impact on your success and enjoyment while out on the water. Here are the most important features to consider when choosing a halibut fishing reel:
Line Capacity Matters: How to Choose the Best Halibut Fishing Reel for Your Needs

Drag Your Way to Success: The Importance of a Strong Drag System in Halibut Fishing Reels
Drag System: A strong and smooth drag system is crucial when fighting halibut, as it allows you to apply pressure and tire out the fish without breaking your line. Gear Up for Success: How Gear Ratio Can Impact Your Halibut Fishing Experience

Examples of reels with high gear ratios include the Abu Garcia Revo Toro Beast, Penn Torque II, and Shimano Stradic Ci4+.

Examples of reels with comfortable and efficient handles include the Daiwa Saltiga, Penn Clash II, and Shimano Twin Power XD.

I would highly recommend using a conventional reel when fishing with heavy weights. Reeling up a pound of lead up hundreds of feet repeatedly with anything else can be exhausting and leave your arms feeling fatigued by the end of the day. Therefore, I suggest looking for a reel with a metal frame, multiple speeds to increase cranking speed, and lever drag.
When it comes to choosing a brand, TICA, Daiwa, and Penn are all solid choices and can easily be serviced. If you’re on a budget, I recommend checking out the Penn Fathom II, as it offers excellent value for money.
As a fellow San Diego resident and avid halibut fisherman, I’ve found that a 9′ rod with a line rating of 12-25/30 paired with a spinning reel loaded with 12-15 pound mono or 30-pound spectra backing and a 12-20 pound fluorocarbon top shot works well. I’ve personally had a lot of success using Lucky Craft lures and tend to remove the middle hook for easier unhooking without compromising the lure’s action.
Additionally, I’ve had luck using old-school lures like Krokodiles and Kastmasters. Don’t underestimate the effectiveness of plastics either, especially swim baits. Experiment with different types of lures and techniques to find what works best for you and the conditions you’re fishing in.
As an owner of both Penn and Daiwa spinning reels, I would highly recommend going with the Daiwa BG. While the drag on both reels is comparable, I find that the BG is a bit more sensitive and has a smoother feel overall compared to my Penn Fierce and Battle 2.
The line lay on the BG is also better, which has resulted in fewer wind knots for me (a big problem I’ve had with my Battle). However, I do prefer the handle on the Penn reels, as they feel less bulky and palm better.
One downside of the BG is the bail, which doesn’t give a nice click sound as the Penn does. The 3500 size of the BG is slightly larger than the 4000 size of the Penn, but both have held up well despite my abuse during the salmon run in Michigan. I’ve dunked them and gotten sand in them countless times, yet they still work phenomenally.
Overall, I would recommend the Daiwa BG over the Penn reels. It’s a smoother reel with a better line lay, though it does have a weaker bail. However, I can’t stress enough how much I love both reels and how well they’ve held up over time.
I use a variety of brands for different fishing scenarios. However, these days I find myself leaning towards Daiwa over Shimano, especially when it comes to reels. Even though I have some high-end Shimano rods and reels, I have found that most of my recent purchases have been from Daiwa.
One particular Daiwa reel I own has stood the test of time, having been in use for nearly two decades of hard use. It’s a smooth workhorse that pushed me towards using more Daiwa gear. My positive experiences with other Daiwa reels have only confirmed my preference for the brand.
That being said, I still think highly of Shimano reels, and the Stradic FL is no exception. It’s the most refined and well-built spinning reel on the market, second only to the current Shimano Sustain. The Stradic FL provides great value for the price, featuring a long-stroke spool (a design found in the Stella FI), a clutch found in the Stella FJ, and the same X-Protect found in the Stella FJ.
As someone who prefers Penn reels, I own a Fierce III. However, I have to correct the previous comment stating that the Fierce III is a $100-$200 reel. It typically falls just under $100 in the price range. If you want better gear, I suggest upgrading to a Penn Battle III.
But, if you’re looking for a reel primarily for freshwater and occasional inshore fishing, you can save some money by opting for the Penn Pursuit III instead. It’s a solid option and you can save around $30 compared to Battle III.
When it comes to selecting a spinning reel, I consider various factors like quality, price, and durability. I have used Stradic, BG, and Fierce reels, and while they differ in price, the quality is apparent in the order of Stradic, BG, and Fierce.
However, if you are on a budget and looking for a good spinning reel, I recommend the Penn Spinfisher IV 2500, which is priced at around $160 on Amazon, or the Daiwa Saltist 2500, which costs $199 on Amazon. Both are excellent reels that offer durability and performance.
If you prefer something lightweight and extremely smooth and takes good care of your reels, I suggest going for the Stradic. However, if you are tough on your gear and want a reel that is powerful and water-sealed, the Spinfisher IV is the better choice. It may not be as smooth as the Stradic, but it makes up for it with its CNC brass gears and IPX5 water seal, unlike the Fierce.
However, the Spinfisher may be a bit heavy for freshwater fishing. As for the Saltist, it is a middle ground between the Spinfisher and Stradic, with smoothness, lightness, and durability, but with less sealing than the Spinfisher. Overall, it depends on your needs and preferences. Happy fishing from Florida!
I remember a time, about 8 or 10 years back when Lew’s and Quantum were the companies making big strides in reel innovation. Both Daiwa and Shimano had to play catch up with Lew’s in the market. Shimano had lost customers due to quality issues that they have since resolved.
Nowadays, Lew’s, BPS, and Abu are all made by Doyo, a South Korean company that builds reels to whomever’s specs they are given. However, they fell into the same trap as Shimano did with the aluminum gear/carbon drag mistake. While Shimano has since resolved this issue, Lew still needs to make an adjustment. Are they bad reels? Not really. In fact, the BB1 Pro and the Tournament MB/MP are excellent choices. However, the higher-end reels are where Lew’s seems to suffer.
Another thing to keep in mind is the rise of social media marketing. These past couple of years, marketing through social media has become a thing. If someone has a reel before its official release, it’s important to ask yourself how they got it and if their opinions about the reel are genuine. Also, it’s worth considering how they can afford all that gear and still not have a boat. There are still good players out there, but there are also some bad ones.
As someone who has been surf fishing in Southern California for most of my life, I can confidently say that Lucky Craft Flash Minnow 110 in metallic sardine or anchovy patterns is the best way to fish for halibut. These fish are not line-shy, so you can tie on a 10-20lb test behind the lure without worrying about it.
Halibut typically hide in holes in the first or second trough and most of the legal ones I’ve caught were no more than 30 feet from the shore. I suggest fishing the slack high tides and finding these holes. To identify the larger ones, it’s a good idea to scout the area during low tide and look at the sand structure. Later in the day, come back to the same spot during high tide and fish the holes.
It’s also crucial to keep moving up and down the beach and not stay in one spot for too long. If you don’t get a bite after 6-7 casts, move 30-40 feet down the beach and try again. When casting the lure, reel it in slowly enough to feel the lure wiggling in the surf. When a halibut bites, you won’t feel a typical bite, so keep tension and hold still to see if there are any head shakes.
Halibut fishing can be a bit hit or miss, but it’s always worth it when you find the right spot. Lucky Craft Flash Minnow 110 is an excellent choice for halibut fishing. It took me some time to believe in it, but once I did, I realized how good they can be. Try fishing the river mouth at the Newport jetty and the troughs in front of it as they can be quite deep.
In summary, if you want to catch halibut, get yourself a Lucky Craft Flash Minnow 110. They may cost around $20, but they are definitely worth it.
It seems like the SaltX reel is highly recommended in this community, but unfortunately, it’s not easily accessible where I live. I’m interested in trying out other North American brands such as Daiwa or Okuma.
Although I have owned many Shimanos, including the 21 Twin Power SW which is my current main reel, I’m curious to give Daiwa a shot, especially their MQ series. I’ve also considered the BG, but a friend of mine is getting it, so I’ll opt for a different reel to try out and exchange with my friend.
I’ve been eyeing the Ballistic as well, but I’d appreciate hearing others’ opinions on this model. Daiwa’s product lineups are less familiar to me compared to Shimano’s, as most of their reels like the Exist and Airity seem to be designed for freshwater fishing.
If anyone has experience using Daiwa reels for saltwater applications or has any recommendations on specific models, I’d love to hear them!
In my opinion, the 22 Saltist is a bit more heavy-duty than the 22 Ballistic. The metal frame on the Saltist reduces the chance of flex when fighting larger fish, and it has a cool metal knob. It’s worth noting that the 22 Ballistic is no longer available in a 6000 size, but I have the 2017 model and I like that it’s lighter. If you plan to cast all day, especially from shore, the weight of the reel can make a big difference. Of course, everyone’s needs are different, so what works for me may not work for you.
I recently purchased the DAIWA BG reel which is priced at around $150. However, I must admit that the 5000 sizes and above are quite heavy. I also bought the Shimano Vanford 5000 and it feels like it weighs next to nothing. It’s amazing how well it handles big 8-pound fish. The barracudas don’t last long while fighting like a pelagic, but they put up a great battle and the Vanford responds very well
